is a protocol for the prevention of the worldwide spread of pests transmitted by wood, signed in Rome in March 2002 by several countries.
All wooden containers must be treated with the FAO ISPM15; raw sawn wood, new and used pallets, collars, cages, drawers, packaging for wine and fruit and vegetable products, spools, bases, supports, saddles, skids and wooden storage materials (straw).
The FAO ISPM15 protocol requires that these materials be treated in a special HT oven, in which the temperature of the wood is raised to about 60 degrees for 32 minutes.
The FAO ISPM15 standard excludes from this obligation wood-based materials, made by processing: plywood, OSB, wood wool, sawdust, shavings and the like, in particular raw wood cut into pieces with a thickness less than 6 mm. The standard has defined that a mark must be placed on the treated packaging to identify the person responsible for the treatment.
WARNING: Packaging marked and treated with FAO ISPM 15 is not mandatory for shipments within the EU, with the exception of packaging from Portugal.
