Telematic interchange at the port of Genoa

Following three years of testing, the Port of Genoa has implemented a groundbreaking digital procedure. This new system will eliminate over 600,000 paper documents and streamline operations for shipping agents and freight forwarders. Genoa becomes the first Italian port to adopt the electronic release and complete dematerialization of delivery notes.

Two major maritime agencies, China Shipping and CMA CGM, actively participated in the pilot phase. Together, these carriers handle a massive share of the port’s import traffic. Consequently, they will stand as the first operators to fully integrate the new digital system into their daily routines.

The National Vision for Digital Port Ecosystems

Admiral Giovanni Pettorino, Commissioner of the Port Authority of Genoa, explained that this electronic release marks the foundation for a broader national digital port network. The strategic initiative aims to eliminate paper-based workflows entirely. Furthermore, the technology will significantly accelerate cargo transit times inside the harbor area.

Hub Telematica, a technology company backed by Assagenti and Spediporto, developed the digital platform. According to its managing directors, this procedure triggers an era-defining shift for the Genoese port across three core areas:

  • Procedural Efficiency: The platform replaces outdated physical handovers with instantaneous digital validations.
  • Supply Chain Security: The encrypted system provides superior protection against the counterfeiting of delivery notes and transport orders.
  • Cultural Evolution: Agencies can finally reassign traditional messengers—previously tied to manual document drop-offs—to higher-value logistics tasks.

Optimizing the Cargo Release Cycle

“The document delivery counter has always caused friction in the relationship between maritime agents and forwarders. This new procedure helps us optimize the document cycle for cargo release and drastically reduces operational bottlenecks,” explains Gianfranco Gazzolo, Managing Director of China Shipping Italy Agency.
