Dockworkers from Maine to Texas are on strike!

US East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers have launched their first strike in nearly 50 years.

The shutdown, triggered by stalled talks over a new collective bargaining agreement and wage disputes, currently paralyzes half of the nation’s ports. The strike affects approximately 36 maritime gateways that handle nearly half of all US ocean imports and exports. This disruption threatens to heavily impact the global supply chain, risking delivery delays for businesses and consumers alike, while potentially driving up retail prices.

The ILA (International Longshoremen’s Association) union accuses the United States Maritime Alliance—which represents port employers—of blocking a potential deal before the contract expiration. The union highlights that ocean carriers continue to rake in billions in profits in 2024, yet offer dockworkers an unacceptable wage package. In addition to higher pay, the ILA demands a total ban on automation for cranes, gates, and container-moving trucks.

The shutdown directly threatens the peak holiday shopping season, as it will delay shipments of critical commodities: from toys and artificial Christmas trees to automotive parts, coffee, and perishable fruit. The ripple effects will also hit international markets, particularly the UK, which counts the United States as its primary trading partner.

If the strike severely threatens national economic security, President Joe Biden has the authority to suspend the industrial action for an 80-day cooling-off period under the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act. However, during a recent interview, the President stated he does not intend to intervene, arguing that enforcing such legislation does not help free collective bargaining.
