The Flexitank was born long before its commercial use: the first flexible bags for liquids date back to World War II, when they were used to transport fuel. Their use then extended to the military in the 1960s. However, it was in the 1970s, in the United Kingdom, that the Flexitank began to gain popularity as a more economical alternative to ISO tanks for exporting liquids.
The decisive turning point came in the 1990s, with the introduction of multilayer polyethylene materials: this gave rise to the Flexitank as we know it today: a flexible and resistant bag installed inside a standard 20-foot container box (Dry), capable of converting a standard space into an ideal carrier for the sea and land transport of non-hazardous liquids. The latest construction techniques allow the production of Flexitank with the elimination of longitudinal seams that allow the reduction of risks, defects and failures. These new materials, such as Ethylene Co-Polymer, provide greater elastic properties, greater energy absorption and consequently greater physical strength, durability and the relative safety of the loaded goods.
The flexible Flexitank tanks are capable of holding up to 24,000 liters and are set up inside a standard 20-foot maritime container. These new materials make it possible to exploit every centimeter of space available during transport and it is estimated that it is possible to ship over 25% more goods than traditional methods, for example exceeding the limits imposed by the ISOTANK tank tanks, whose exorbitant costs of rental and complex cleaning operations aimed at avoiding contamination of the transported goods, decrease the efficiency of the transport cycle, increasing shipping costs.
