South Korean shipping company HMM has announced that the world’s largest container ship, the HMM Algeciras, departed the port of Yantian on May 8 bound for Rotterdam, carrying a record-breaking load of 19,621 TEUs.
Currently on its maiden voyage, the HMM Algeciras is the first of twelve 24,000 TEU-class vessels under construction for the carrier. With a length of 399.9 meters, a beam of 61 meters, and a nominal capacity of 23,964 TEUs, it officially stands as the largest container ship in the world.
This departure surpasses the previous record set in August 2019 by the MSC Gülsün, which had departed the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Malaysia with 19,574 TEUs on board.
