With the FuelEU Maritime regulation coming into force early next year, shipping companies could face severe penalties if they fail to meet greenhouse gas intensity reduction targets. Non-compliant vessels will incur fines of €2,400 per tonne of VLSFO equivalent for missing the initial 2% reduction target compared to the 2020 baseline.
Following an extensive analysis of 13,000 vessels operating within the EU/EEA, maritime data firm OceanScore predicts total industry penalties of €1.345 billion in 2025. Crucially, the container sector will shell out the most, accounting for 29% of these gross fines. Meanwhile, the ropax segment follows at 14%, while tankers and bulk carriers will each contribute 13% to the total penalty pool.
Despite these steep financial challenges, the new regulatory landscape offers a strong opportunity for the transportation sector. Shipping companies can leverage this shift to innovate, adopt alternative fuels, and implement advanced energy-saving technologies.
