Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) joins Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Yang Ming, and joins THE Alliance.
Members of THE Alliance have also decided to open a new four-member cooperation with a mandate until 2030. The agreement was agreed in Taipei on June 19, 2019. The new contract between the four lines will begin April 1, 2020 .
Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, commented as follows:
HMM is a great solution for THE Alliance as it will provide a series of new and modern ships that will help us deliver better quality and be more efficient – and further reduce our emissions. HMM has ordered twelve 23,000 TEU ships to be delivered in the second quarter of 2020. Furthermore, in the second quarter of 2021, 8 new 15,000 TEU units will become part of the new HMM fleet. The 12 new 23,000 TEU ships will be operational in the Far East – Northern Europe and will improve THE Alliance’s portfolio of services.
HMM’s participation is an important milestone for THE Alliance as it will help us expand our network of customer services and facilitate the development of THE Alliance, starting next year, as highlighted by Bronson Hsieh, Chairman and CEO of Yang Ming.
As for Jae-Hoon Bae, President and CEO of HMM, he said that being a full member of THE Alliance gives the company great pride. Now they are convinced that it will be a success and will generate added value. THE Alliance was founded by Hapag-Lloyd and also NYK, MOL and K’Line (which merged to become Ocean Network Express – ONE) and Yang Ming. The start of the collaboration is dated 1 April 2017.
