The IMCSO aims to raise the standards of cybersecurity risk assessment, ensuring safer operations at sea and addressing cybersecurity challenges. It has developed a certification program for safety consultants and maintains a professional registry to help dispatch organizations select experienced personnel. Furthermore, it validates reporting results to ensure consistency with centralized data, accessible to authorities and third parties to assess the risk status of ships.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) imposes safety measures on shipping companies, which must protect their onboard safety management systems and subject them to regular audits. The IMCSO also offers a maritime standard certification with training in four disciplines, allowing cybersecurity professionals to qualify as offensive security or maritime cybersecurity specialists, covering specific fields such as engineered security and cloud security.
To address challenges, such as ship captains’ lack of time to accompany auditors during assessments, IMCSO is committed to equipping the safety industry with tools to conduct uniform testing, reducing the associated complexity, costs and delays to evaluations. It also maintains a register of approved maritime cybersecurity vendors, profiling approved security vendors and reporting their individual qualifications. Finally, IMCSO’s standardized ship-by-ship data allows for the creation of a shareable and searchable dataset.
