Opening the works of MEPC 80 in London at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization, the Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres and the Secretary General of the IMO Kitack Limha asked the countries to work towards the reduction of greenhouse gases emitted by ships.

There is a need to include ambitious science-based targets for both absolute emissions reductions and clean fuel use from 2030 onwards, emphasizing the need to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

Guterres urged everyone to leave London after agreeing a greenhouse gas strategy that commits the sector to net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. This must include ambitious targets starting from 2030, both on the absolute reduction of emissions and on the use of clean fuels. Here are the points underlined:

  1. Invest in sustainable ocean economies for food, renewable energy and livelihoods, through long-term financing. Guterres recalled that the goal number 14 of the Sustainable Development Goals – SDG, Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development, received the least support of any SDG.
  2. Replicate Oceanic Success. Guterres, argues that the ocean must become a model on how to manage the global commons and the use of effective conservation measures based on marine protected areas and integrated coastal zone management.
  3. Increased protection of the oceans and the people whose lives and livelihoods depend on them. Shipping should commit to being net-zero by 2050 and present credible plans to implement these commitments.
  4. More science and innovation. We need to invest in science and innovation to propel us towards a new chapter in global ocean action and has launched the call to join the goal of mapping 80% of the seabed by 2030.
